Sarah Benson, 72, of Thompsons Station died on July 22, 2017 at her home. She was a native of Nashville, TN and preceded in death by her husband, Craig Benson, and survived by two daughters, Rachael and Helen.
Sarah and her husband, Craig moved to the community of Thompson’s Station in 1976 from Memphis, TN. They arrived at their Kinnard/Cherry home on a cold evening with a warm fire in their fireplace, a bottle of wine, and the skeleton key to their home by Jim Porter. A lasting friendship began with the Porter/Irwin families for which Sarah often said they could not have survived the country life without them. They were truly the "Green Acres" characters, with Sarah learning the maintenance of her newly acquired Farmall Super A tractor. The Town of Thompson’s Station will remember her many contributions of community service, but will fondly remember Sarah on her tractor mowing or transporting water to the many trees she planted at her residence and the park which she loved.
Sarah worked with the citizen’s committee that achieved its incorporation in 1990. She became an alderman in 1990 and served on the Planning Commission since it was established in 2004. In addition to her work in Thompson’s Station, she was active in PTO for the Boys and Girls Club of Franklin. She was actively involved in the Thompson’s Station Festival for many years as well as site manager for the Farmers Market. As alderman, Sarah was always available to assist the citizens of Thompson’s Station with their concerns. She was instrumental in the Town's award winning zoning ordinance. Her accomplishments include: Park Land Acquisition, Zoning, Parks Committee, Lee Kittrell Food Drive, as well as supporting Harpeth Watershed, Battlefield Trust, and Nature Conservancy.
Sarah will be remembered for her love of Thompson’s Station, her love of her daughters, Rachael and Helen, her love of nature, and her desire to help others.
A celebration of life will be held at the Thompson’s Station Park (now named Sarah Benson Park) this Friday, August 4th 2017 at 2 pm. This service is open to the Community. Further information about donations will be given once the family has established an account.
